As Broad exits the field to begin his last innings, Nasser Hussain becomes emotional on the radio

When Stuart Broad took the field to begin his final Test innings on Sunday, the spectators at The Oval became a bit emotional. After delivering the shocking news that the upcoming Ashes 5th Test, which would be his last match, at the end of the third day, his supporters were left in a state of disbelief. He will retire at the age of 37 having recorded 600 Test wickets, making him just the second fast bowler in the world (after fellow countryman James Anderson) to do so in the game’s longest format.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-103787″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-police-in-odisha-detain-a-female-priest-and-her-sons-over-a-14-year-old-boys-alleged-human-sacrifice-73777715-12354369-image-a-14-1690747290495-11zon.png” alt=”” width=”1439″ height=”960″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-police-in-odisha-detain-a-female-priest-and-her-sons-over-a-14-year-old-boys-alleged-human-sacrifice-73777715-12354369-image-a-14-1690747290495-11zon.png 634w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-police-in-odisha-detain-a-female-priest-and-her-sons-over-a-14-year-old-boys-alleged-human-sacrifice-73777715-12354369-image-a-14-1690747290495-11zon-150×100.png 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1439px) 100vw, 1439px” />

Broad and Anderson arrived to the field on Sunday to continue the English innings with the previous score of 389/9. The Australian team gathered in line to present the seasoned speedster with a guard of honor knowing that it would be his last at bat. Broad offered Anderson a side embrace as they entered the field and seemed to accompany him during the guard of honour as well.

While Broad was able to enjoy himself, Anderson, who turned 41 on Sunday, remained in the background close to the boundary rope. Nasser Hussain, a former England captain who was doing the commentary at the time, started to cry as well.

“I’m crying right now. As he did throughout his career, he wanted him to support him and throw his arm around him, Hussain stated on-air.

Before the hosts were bowled out, Broad added a six against Mitchell Starc to make his last over memorable. Australian quick’s short pitch was met by Broad’s stunning six over mid-wicket. The hosts were able to set Australia a target of 385 thanks to the maximum addition to England’s overnight total.

As a response, Australia’s opening batsmen David Warner and Usman Khawaja scored unbroken fifties to help the visitors reach 135-0 on a fourth day that was cut short by rain, keeping Broad waiting for his last wicket. When play was halted on the fourth day due to rain, Warner was still in the game and Khawaja, a fellow left-hander, was undefeated at 69.

Australia needs 249 more runs to win the series 3-1 and win the Ashes for the first time in England since 2001.

If Australia is successful in achieving that goal, it would be the second-highest score in England and the eighth-highest fourth-innings total to win any Test, behind only Australia’s 404-3 at Headingley in 1948, when batting legend Don Bradman scored an unbeaten 173 and Arthur Morris hit 182.
