Khawaja on life after Warner: “If we picked players on form, the Australian team would change every other week.”

Usman Khawaja, an Australian Test batsman, has advised the national selectors to consider quality more than form when selecting his next opening partner, after David Warner’s departure from the longest format the following month.

The concluding match of the three-match series, which begins on January 3, will include Warner playing his farewell Test against Pakistan at his home stadium of Sydney.

While Khawaja isn’t very worried about his future opening partner, he has encouraged the selectors to choose a guy who has the potential to excel internationally.

“I’ll be completely honest: I don’t really care who my next opening partner is. Khawaja said on SEN Radio that the selectors would choose whomever they believe is the greatest fit for the position.

“I don’t even think that the so-called ‘bat-off’ that everyone is talking about is real. It will likely come down to much more than that, in my opinion. The form cannot be used to choose teams. You must choose teams based on your assessment of each player’s superiority.

You really can’t do that because if we selected teams based on form, the Australian squad would be rotating every other week.

“Class is something that never changes. The form is transient at all times. It will be intriguing to see their course. Really, I’m not sure,” he continued.

Khawaja said that the number of runs he has achieved in first-class cricket should not be taken into consideration while choosing his next opening partner.

“I think it (making runs) does (play into it),” he said.

However, I believe that if you go back a little further, covering the previous five years, any player still in the running would have amassed a huge amount of runs.

It would be quite similar. Your desired sample size will determine how large it is.
