Meet the first Indian actor to make one crore rupees a film and to stop performing at the height of their career—not Shah Rukh, Amitabh, Salman, or Rajinikanth

Filmmaking has always been an economic endeavor centered on the hero. The main actor’s or actress’s name has always been used to market the largest movies, whether they are romance or action flicks. However, this has meant that a large portion of a movie’s budget has been able to be demanded by some of the greatest performers in the world. The greatest actors in India now want more than Rs 100 crore for a single film. However, not so long ago, even making a film for Rs 1 crore seemed like a pipe dream. That was before a single megastar shattered the glass ceiling.

It was 1992. In Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan was the current Shehanshah. Rajinikanth was making a name for himself as a superstar down south. And yet, at that time, none of them had made a crore rupees a film. However, one individual in Tollywood did. With Aapadbandhavudu, megastar Chiranjeevi demanded Rs 1.25 crore, making him the highest-paid actor in India. At the time, Amitabh Bachchan was allegedly demanding around Rs 90 lakh.

Chiranjeevi was acclaimed as the most powerful star in India’s market shortly after this achievement. In September, The Week magazine featured a cover article on him with the heading “Bigger than Bachchan.” Aapadbandhavudu was an enormous smash, solidifying Chiranjeevi’s position as the leading actor in the Telugu cinema industry. He would go on to retain this title for ten more years with a string of successful films, including the box office triumph Indra. Chiranjeevi startled his followers in 2008 when he said he was giving up acting to concentrate on politics. The megastar carried out this choice, taking an almost ten-year hiatus from motion pictures. He made a comeback in 2017 with the smash tune Khaidi No. 17, and he has since produced several additional hits.

The next famous person to charge Rs 1 crore was Kamal Haasan, who accomplished it in 1994. His buddy and adversary Rajinikanth quickly trailed duit. Amitabh Bachchan started asking Rs 1 crore for each film after he returned from his hiatus in 1996. Sridevi was the first Indian actress to get that kind of money for a single picture in 1996. The three Khans joined the club after a few years as well. In today’s main Indian film industry, almost every notable performer charges this kind of compensation.
